My blog's not been going so well lately.
First I took a sabbatical roughly the length of Euro 2004 (coincidence? You decide...), then when I do get around to writing an entry, I manage to offend my oldest friend.
doh!
I'll explain...
I started writing an entry about the 'Knee-Jerk Contrarian Game' because it amused me, but I thought that just mocking people was a little unconstructive. The whole point of me writing online is to curb my natural tendency toward ranting dissmisive and generally over-dissmissive (the idea being that what I write is instantly visible to the world, so that should make me think before I rant...)
so much for that theory...
What I attempted to do was address an ongoing discussion between 'Mr.C' and myself regarding taste and objectivity in aesthetic appreciation. In my head this was going to be a grand discussion, but I got started, but then got invited down the pub, so I quicky finished off the entry, posted it and thought no more of it.
A few days later I got an email from Mr.C.
Mr.C. wasn't very happy. He seemed to think that I'd misrepresented his views, and basically called him an idiot.
I was horrified.
I re-read my entry and I have to say I could see what he meant. It sounded like I was calling him bone-headed and arrogant. This wasn't what I'd meant to say, it was meant to be a discussion between myself and Mr.C about bone-headed and/or arrogant people, but re-reading the post, this was far from clear.
I was even more horrified.
I mailed him back, apologised and explained to him what I'd been trying to say.
He kindly accepted my apology and pointed out that the post didn't convey my point quite as clearly as it might have done.
He also requested that I publish the following statement:
"Star Wars is simply the worst film ever made and I am very sorry for ever thinking different! This is the freely expressed opinion of Joseph D. Talbot and I will from this moment on always think this way."
So there you go John, many apologies, and I've now mis-represented my views as well as yours...
And of course, all of this comes from me posting my thoughts online without proper consideration, thus making a fool of myself, which is exacly what is at the heart of "Knee-Jerk Contrarian Game".
Poetic justice?
