We spent a week in France a few weeks ago (I've been just too busy to write about it since I got back, honest...)
We flew to Nice and hired car to drive up into the Alps, where we'd booked a Gite on a farm. I'd never driven on the right, or driven a left-hand drive car before. It didn't take too long to get the hang of it, but by that time I'd scraped the passenger side door against a cliff wall (sorry Heather...)
This stressed me out in no small measure, but hey, stuff happens, and it turns out I'd got full excess cover for the car when I rented it (result...).
We had a great time, went for walks and bike rides in the Alps, and generally did stuff that used to sound boring, but now just seems relaxing. The food, of course, was great (though hard to come by, France is closed alot.)
The place where we stayed was called Paulianne, a working farm in the Rhone valley and was really nice. The owners, Pam and Robin, were extremely welcoming and friendly (thanks guys, hope to see you again!).
Basically the place for which the term 'rustic charm' was invented, and I highly recommend it if you want to chill out for a bit with Chickens scratching around the place.
Though you might want to brush up on your driving-on-the-right skills first...
