I was interested to see last week that Ruud van Nistelrooy 'broke ranks' (journalist speak for 'putting his foot in it') and admitted that, duh, yes, Man Utd. were missing David Beckham both on an off the pitch.
While this may be stating the obvious for most, it's hardly something that many Utd. players would be brave enough to publically (or even out loud, in case Fergie hears...)
Now, given that Ruud's exceptional goal-scoring ability is pretty much the only thing keeping ManU going at the momnet, you might think that he, if anyone, might be able to get away with airing such a view.
But we're talking about a manager who sold the rock of his treble-winning defence (Jaap Stam) because of a mouth-open, brain-in-neutral moment regarding transfers in stam's book.
Also the manger, of course, that sold a dedicated and talented player to their main European rivals (Beckham to Real Madrid).
Then, come last Saturday, Ruud finds himself on the bench! Apparently, Fergie is worried that Ruud is in danger of 'burn out' (he is only at the peak of his game at 26. the poor flower...). Isn't that what he said about Beckham when he dropped him after the boot incident last year, just before he sold him?
I wonder how far Fergie's egomania will go? Perhaps Ruud will fullfil his desire to play with Beckham again, perhaps in a shiny new bright white shirt?
