Okay, so change of plan again, we didn't go to Oaxaca either, at least, not for more than an hour. It turns out that Mexico is rather big, actually, and that it take quiet a while to get anywhere by bus. so in order that we don't spend the entire week on buses, we decided to try and get to Puerto Escondido as quickly as possible, without stopping to look around Oaxaca.
This involved alot of busing. We got a six hour bus ride to the border, which was fine apart from the immigration bit, which is always a bit scary. The Guatemalans charges us to leave the country, which I don't think is an 'official' fee. They then increased the fee, because I couldn't pay in Quetzals because I'd just changed them all into Pesos at a rather extortionate exchange rate. So we got double stitched sigh!!.
From the Mexican border at Tapetula, we then got a 13 hour overnight bus to Oaxaca, then a bus from there to Puerto Escondido. We thought this would take about six hours, but it turned out to be nine. The journey was very picturesque in places, passing through mountains strewn liberally with impressive looking cacti. The mountains also meant hours of constantly winding roads though, which made Hev feel quite ill. I also felt quite quesy at one point, and I never get travel-sick...
All in all it was 31 hours of non-stop buses, and I began to think it was never going to end. But it did, thankfully. We spent today on the beach, and the same goes for tomorrow, then we'll fly to Mexico city (just looking at the route and estimating the bus journey makes me shiver...) Anyway, we'd have to leave on Thurday night to make our flight on Saturday morning.
So finally we get some serious beach action, we're really not going to see any of Mexico though. We underestimated how big it is, but also we did alot in Guatemala, so never mind, we'll just have to come back..
