On June 8th this year, we will be able to witness the first Transit of Venus for over a hundred years.
The Transit of Venus is a 'rare astronomical phenomenon in which the planet Venus passes across the face of the Sun' (it says here...), and therefore Venus is visible as a black dot crossing the Sun (though of course you need to use apparatus to see it without going blind...)
Why do I know or care about this rather unusual upcoming astronomical event? I've been working on an online virtual collection of historical artefacts related to the Transits of Venus in collaboration with The Museum of the History of Science at Oxford University.
