V-Y Day

9 January 2007 - 9:24am -- Joseph

We're still trying to resolve our Visa issue, and time is running out - they expire on the 15th. We're off to Yaounde today. We'll stay overnight and try and find the right people to speak to tomorrow. Genesis will be coming with us, which is handy, as dealing with Cameroonian bureaucracy can be difficult - doing it in the French-speaking province will be impossible for us!

I'm not sure exactly what will happen (we never are), but we'll get it sorted one way or the other. Here are plans A through to G:

  1. Get residence permits for free (on the basis that we are volunteers)
  2. Get 6 month Visa extensions (only possible in Yaounde - probable cost £100 each)
  3. Get residence permits issued in Yaounde (probable cost, ~£250 each)
  4. Get residence permits issued in Buea (probable cost, who knows...)
  5. Do nothing, try and sneak out of the country in June (not legal, risky, not an option)1
  6. Do nothing, doctor our visas in Photoshop before departure in June (very not legal, very risky, really really not an option)2
  7. Go home. :-(

Let's hope we don't get passed 'D'. Hopefully by Thursday we'll have the issue resolved, and I can get back to worrying about whether or not I know enough about MySQL to teach it!

Wish us luck...

1,2: Note to immigration officials in Cameroon, Belgium and Great Britain - I'm just kidding...

Joe, MySQL is easy:

UPDATE Visas SET LengthOfStay = LengthOfStay + 6 WHERE Name = 'Hev' OR Name = 'Joe'

Rich,

yep, that sounds good, but do you have the connection details that will give us wrtie permission?

Now *that* would be handy, unfortunately, boring old paper certified with a fiscal stamp is king 'round here...
